We all have heard of dozens of funny stories about our workplace and we could listen to them for hours. Well, here is one such hilarious story I’ve heard from a friend who works in HR.
My friend told me that every time she wants to give an example of commitment led to the extreme, she uses a story about a cleaning lady named Mary.
“Mary was a loyal employee who’s been working at the same company for years. People respected her for her hopper and for the fact that she helped anyone at anytime. She was, however, a quite interesting woman, with whom everyone was familiar, including the big bosses from abroad, who never missed the opportunity that say “hello” and ask her how she’s doing.
The company was led by a severe and serious man, but with whom Maria got along very well.
One day, the Director decided to have a discussion with one of his subordinates who didn’t handle the tasks. It was a sensitive situation, because it wasn’t the first time they talked about that subject. Moreover, all the previous discussions resulted in various commitments that weren’t followed through.
To give weight to their talk, that was planned for the next day, the CEO wrote a few notesregarding the message he intended to send to his employee. He even filled a written warning for one of the recent bloomer of his employee, which he wanted to give him personally.
The CEO wanted to have one last talk face to face with his employee and he was very confident that it was going to work just fine. He looked one more time at the paper, before leaving home in a very good mood.
Here comes Mary. She was responsible for keeping the office clean both during and immediately after working hours. Now she had to make one last round through all the offices, to sweep the floors, to collect all the cups, to dust and to take out the garbage. But, as I mentioned before, Maria was more than a standard employee.
This time, while making her regular cleaning in the CEO’s office, Mary noticed the written warning. She picked the paper up, and after studying it she saw the name of the employee in trouble. Mary thought that the CEO planned to deliver the document to the person in question, but forgot. So, she took the initiative again …
The next day, when the CEO came to work, he was surprised to see his subordinate in his office, very nervous and deeply offended because he personally received a written warning, without any prior explanation. And from Mary”.
